26 Feb Darren & Tiffany or Tiffany & Darren? The Art of Naming in Wedding Traditions
Ladies and Gentlemen……
Welcome to a topic that’s as old as time yet as fresh as each couple’s love story: the order of names. Is it Darren & Tiffany or Tiffany & Darren? This seemingly simple question opens up a world of cultural traditions and personal preferences.
In many Eastern cultures, such as the Chinese tradition, there’s a saying, “lan chour, ni yow; Lam cho, lui yau,” which translates to “man on the left, and woman on the right.” This suggests a preference for Darren & Tiffany. This placement aligns with broader cultural norms and historical practices.
Contrast this with Western traditions where chivalry reigns and the phrase “Ladies and Gentlemen” suggests a “ladies first” approach, leading to Tiffany & Darren. This practice is deeply ingrained in social etiquette, often seen in formal settings and events.
At JLS, where I craft albums and slideshows, I’ve embraced the latter approach, placing ladies’ names first. This decision isn’t just about consistency in folder structures and portfolios, but it reflects a broader respect and acknowledgment of the women we celebrate in these joyous occasions. It’s a small but meaningful way to show appreciation and give prominence in our narratives.
Ultimately,
the choice of name order is deeply personal and should reflect each couple’s unique blend of cultural heritage and individual preferences. There’s no right or wrong answer – only what feels true to you.
