A Chinese Wedding in Kuala Lumpur, in Five Photographs

These are the times we get emotion gushing out of people.

By Jon Low

A Chinese traditional wedding, followed by a grand reception dinner in Kuala Lumpur.

These are five photographs from that day, and what was happening in each one.

I wrote about why to book the full day for a Chinese wedding in Kuala Lumpur in another post. This one is about the photographs.

01

The dai kam cheh

It’s part of a customary Chinese wedding. The master of ceremony, the dai kam cheh, she dictates the sequence of events that happen on a wedding day.

This shot was photographed while they were starting their “3 day return to home routine”.

A bride in a gold embroidered dress smiles from the open window of a car on a quiet road
The groom carries the bride down a hallway holding her bouquet while bridesmaids clap behind them

02

Back to the room

It’s the glorified approach of the groom to bring the bride home, back to the room. Part of a Chinese wedding ritual.

03

The rails

The mom and daughter were standing by the rails spectating the bridal games that were happening downstairs.

I turned around, and noticing how the rails could become a leading line, I took the photo.

A mother and her small daughter in red dresses stand hand in hand at the top of a concrete staircase between black rails
The groom in a grey suit sits in a row with his groomsmen in sunglasses and pink braces on a low wall by the water

04

The groomsmen

Mostly because we were at the house, and the space is available to photograph them.

05

The tea ceremony

It’s a moment taken during the tea ceremony ritual. These are the times we get emotion gushing out of people.

A grandmother would tear up happy, the mom could laugh out loud. In this case the dad is smiling.

Two parents sit in front of a brick wall under a red double happiness sign, the father laughing
